Books Bring Library Expansion

Students at St. Michael Indian School in St. Michaels, Arizona clean shelving units before their assembly.

Over the past year, Reader to Reader has donated thousands of books to replenish the school’s antiquated library. At the start of the school year a second adjoining room was opened for library use, including a bank of computers that were also donated by Reader to Reader.

With the large influx of books came a need for additional shelving units. Irving Nelson of the Navajo Nation Library in Window Rock, Arizona generously donated some used shelving units that the library was not using.

A special thank you to the Navajo Nation Library for their assistance in this project.

Thank You Michael Carroll and Penguin Group!

We would like to give a shout out to author Michael Carroll, who is best known for his series of superhero novels, The New Heroes. He has generously donated copies of the first book in this series, The Quantum Prophecy, to a boys' book club at Zanetti Magnet School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He first hooked the boys with his writing and has now made their book club possible to providing them with the books they need to keep reading and discussing.

Thank you Michael Carroll! They couldn't have done it without you.

For more information about Michael, you can visit please visit his website at www.michaelowencarroll.com.

Read, Think, Share serving 400 students

In 2007, a small group of Navajo students in New Mexico and a handful of Amherst College students met online to read and discuss books – and Read, Think, Share was born.

It’s six years later now, and Read Think, Share is serving 400 students this academic year. That’s 400 students in daily contact with a college student who can be a discussion partner, an academic cheerleader, and a role model

Combining motivated college-age reading mentors with middle and high school students has proved a recipe for success: students are reading and writing – and reporting increased skills and confidence thanks to the program. Most importantly, we’ve seen students who start by declaring that they hate reading become enthusiastic readers.

We couldn’t be more proud of the students we’ve worked with, or more grateful for the fantastic mentors who have taken the journey with them!

Books for a Bon Voyage to Nicaragua

Best wishes to Catherine Gobron, Program Director, North Star: Self-Directed Learning for Teens for their upcoming trip to Nicaragua.

Catherine is leading a group of volunteers on a service trip and their work will be in part to develop a small children's library in the community of Omotepe.

Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua.

We are pleased to have contributed Spanish-language children’s books to help fill the shelves.

What a fabulous place to go. Bon voyage!
